Imperial Motel neon sign. A few months after I took this photo in July 2008, the sign and motel were torn down to build a Walgreens.

Like many old train stations, the Santa Fe Railroad station in Kingman stands between the railroad tracks and Old Route 66.

I had the chicken-fried steak and a chocolate malt at Mr. D'z Route 66 Diner.

Powerhouse Visitor Center

The Route 66 Museum is in the old Powerhouse Building.
To see more photos of the Powerhouse Building's neon signs, take a side trip to my Neon Night page.

The museum describes how families traveled the route in covered wagons ...

[bizarre_66kingman_0685.jpg]
... then in beaten-up old trucks, like the Joad family in Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath ...

[bizarre_66kingman_0686.jpg]
... and finally in modern automobiles (note "outboard air conditioner" on passenger window).

Where the people settled, they built Main Street America.
