Camel Rock

Santa Fe, New Mexico

No, this giant camel in the desert is not a mirage! The natural sandstone formation known as Camel Rock, pictured here with a dusting of winter snow, is a landmark for northern New Mexico travelers. Back in the 1960's, I remember you could climb around on the camel's back, but on my last visit the hill was surrounded by a fence -- probably to minimize erosion.

Directions: Camel Rock is 15 miles north of Santa Fe, easily visible on the west side of U.S. 84/285 (across the highway from Camel Rock Casino).

Last visited: December 1986.
