A bizarre sight appears out of the desert haze: a giant steel roof, dwarfing the Native American ruins under it. Visitors to Casa Grande National Monument will learn that the ruins are the remains of a four-story structure that was built around the year 1300. Being made of adobe, the structure was vulnerable to the forces of wind and rain during its 700-add years of abandonment. The roof was built by the government in 1932 to protect the remains from the elements, preverving them for future generations of visitors to learn about this ancient culture. Now, the roof itself is protected by being on the National Register of Historic Places!
