Driving the backroads through remote Yavapai County between Yava and Hillside, the traveler passes through a strange landscape of granite boulders. Suddenly the scenery gets much stranger -- a giant duck appears! Relax; it is only one of the boulders whose natural resemblance to a duck has been emphasized with a layer of white and orange paint. Exactly who originally painted it is lost in the mists of time, but evidently someone is keeping up the tradition; on my May 2010 visit I found the paint fresh and bright.
Directions: On the southeast side of Route 96, 1.3 miles southwest of Yava. The rock is easily seen from the highway, or one can follow a faint foot trail a few hundred feet to a close-up view of the rock.
