Family Fun World

[bizarre_familyfunworld.jpg]

Eloy, Arizona

Several years ago, those driving the freeway between Phoenix and Tucson would notice a strange and puzzling sight. Atop a set of barren hills beside the freeway could be glimpsed a collection of bizarre sculptures, all apparently made out of surplus materials. These included some sort of rocket car, and several gondolas which looked like they may have been salvaged from a tram ride but now perched atop fixed poles. A sign explained FAMILY FUN WORLD -- COMING SOON. Supposedly the owner was trying to develop the property into a theme park, although I could never tell what the theme was, or what "fun" a family could possibly have in this depressing place. Not surprisingly, the effort failed and the sign was later painted over with the words FOR SALE. Now the sign and most of the sculptures are gone. All that can be seen are the gondolas, a large metal framework that looks like a castle or entranceway, and a few dying palm trees. A splendid time is NOT guaranteed for all!
