Ft. Irwin, CaliforniaFt. Irwin, located in a remote section of California's Mojave Desert, has long served as a training ground for many branches of the military. Years ago, one squadron got the idea of painting their company colors on this pile of rocks; other outfits followed suit and now almost every square inch of the pile has been painted with colorful insignias. Directions: From Interstate 15 at Barstow, take Ft. Irwin Road exit and follow Ft. Irwin Road for about 25 miles. The rockpile is on the right side of the road just before the main gate.
