Mud Pots

Salton Sea, California

Near the southeast shore of Southern California's Salton Sea can be seen the bizarre natural formations known as the mud pots. Here, carbon dioxide gas bubbles up through pools of muddy water; the "mud bubbles" break with an audible blorp when they reach the surface. These mud pots have been known for more than 100 years, and at one time carbon dioxide gas was commercially collected in the area.
