Orman Drive

Boulder, Colorado

It was one of the most unbelievable coincidences that has ever occurred to me. In the summer of 1982, I drove cross-country; between overnight stops in Denver and Rocky Mountain National Park, I passed through the city of Boulder. I made a wrong turn; instead of risking a U-turn on the busy highway, I made two right turns into a residential neighborhood where I could safely turn around. As I turned around, I glanced at the street sign; it was Orman Drive! My last name, which is fairly uncommon. Of course I had to snap a photo. Later, looking at a city map of Boulder, I discovered that Orman Drive only runs for that one block! What are the odds that I would randomly encounter it?

Orman Drive was probably named for James Bradley Orman (no relation, as far as I know), Governor of Colorado from 1901 to 1903. There is also a much-longer Orman Avenue in Pueblo, Colorado; James Bradley Orman was from Pueblo and is buried there.

Bonus Challenge: On Google Maps, can you find the street view that corresponds to this photo? The landscaping certainly has changed since 1982!

Directions: Corner of Orman Drive and Morgan Drive.
