Prescott, Arizona

For years I had been driving past the open field which once was the Senator Drive-In, every time thinking I should stop and take a picture of the old sign by the side of the road. I finally did stop and photograph the sign on September 13, 2008. At the time, I didn't know how lucky I was; the sign was unexpectedly torn down only a month later, on October 15, 2008. But the good citizens of Prescott mounted a campain to recover the remains of the sign and restore this irreplaceable piece of car-culture history; by December 2009 the restoration was complete. I returned on May 31, 2010 to photograph the restored sign; my before-and-after photos are presented here.

Directions: On Senator Highway just south of Prescott. The drive-in grounds are posted against trespassing, but the sign is easily visible from the road.
