Woman of the Knolls

[bizarre_simi.jpg]

Simi Valley, California

Rounding a curve on a narrow, winding country road, the traveler suddenly comes upon a mysterious face carved into a sandstone cliff. Apparently there was also once a house here among the Santa Susana Knolls, but it is now only foundations; steps lead to nowhere. Who lived here, who carved the woman's face, and why does she watch over this lonely road?

Directions: On the east side of Box Canyon Road, approximately 1 mile north of Valley Circle Boulevard. The carving is most easily seen while driving northbound. There is a driveway immediately in front of the carving; the site may be private property but is not posted against trespassing.
