This 25-foot-tall sculpture reproduces the moment captured in the iconic 1945 photograph V-J day in Times Square by Alfred Eisenstaedt. The artist is Seward Johnson, who claims to have worked from another (non-copyrighted) photograph snapped at the same instant by Victor Jorgensen. Amorous visitors are expected to smooch in the same pose for a photo op beneath the sculpture; wiseguys are expected to refrain from looking up the dress of the giant nurse. Several other war-related sculptures are located in the area around the aircraft carrier.
Directions: From Harbor Drive, go west on G Street (which turns into Tuna Lane) to its end; sculpture is north of the parking lot, between the Fish Market restaurant and the USS Midway aircraft carrier.
Last visited: December 2010. Reportedly on temporary display until August 2010, but still in place when I visited in December 2010.
