Heading north from Flagstaff on Highway 89, travelers find themselves in wide-open grasslands, their gaze stretching to the distant horizon. Suddenly by the side of the road appears a strange sculpture, a cluster of tree trunks carved smooth and painted with white, ghost-like faces. Who created this unusual work of art, and what does it represent? The answer to "when" is no doubt many years ago; the paint is weathered, but still striking enough to catch the eye and arouse the curiosity of those who travel this lonely country.
