Between Sky and Shadow

Afton Canyon, California

When I took this picture of a desert canyon wall, what attracted me was the starkly contrasting bands of color. What I didn't notice at the time was how symmetrical the composition is. Look carefully at the shaded area at the bottom and the charcoal-grey ridge above it; rotated 180 degrees they are almost exactly the same shape as the reddish ridge and blue sky at the top.
