Nowhere Special

[landscapes_000313_30.jpg]

This is one of my secret places, a rarely visited corner of the desert. Just plain and remote enough to retain its anonymity, it is also a place of small and special charms. Many times I have hiked this sand dune at dawn to watch the first light of day bring the distant ridges into sharp relief. I have watched the wind blow sand down the face of this steep dune, where it spills over a cliff edge into the canyon below. I have seen moonlight pour into the canyon the same way, and have gazed up between the canyon walls at the stars wheeling their endless way across the sky. I have soaked in the sunlight, the silence, the solitude.

To keep this place special, I will not tell you where it is. Places like this owe their very soul to their emptiness; if more people came here, the place itself would cease to exist.
