More than a dozen miles in length, Buckskin Gulch is one of the longest slot canyons in the Colorado Plateau. In many places it is hardly wider than arms' reach, but hundreds of feet deep. Buckskin is no place to be during a flash flood -- many times on our hike, we shuddered at the sight of huge cottonwood logs wedged between the canyon walls, 50 feet or more above our heads. This photograph shows one of the rare spots where the canyon widens, the meandering stream having cut a huge alcove into the cliff face.
