Tunnel to Nowhere

[landscapes_tunnel1.jpg]

An engineering feat when it was constructed in 1922 on central Arizona's U.S. Highway 60, the Claypool Tunnel pierced a steep, rocky ridge, allowing auto traffic to pass through the formerly-forbidding Queen Canyon. In 1952, a new highway alignment and a new tunnel bypassed the old tunnel. Now the only things that pass through it are soft breezes, dim reflected light, and fading echoes of bygone days.
