Deep Space One Launch

Deep Space One was launched aboard a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Station, Florida, on October 24, 1998. This unmanned probe was the first of NASA's New Millennium missions. It proved out 12 new technologies to be used on future missions, one of which was the Small Deep Space Transponder, developed at the Motorola facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. During its extended mission, Deep Space One also performed a flyby of asteroid Braille in July 1999 and Comet Borrelly in September 2001, before being retired at the end of 2001.
