Forest Fire Star Trails

This 70-minute star trail exposure was taken looking straight south. At center are the stars of the constellation Lupus; Centaurus is to the right. During the exposure the tail of Scorpius enters from the left.

We are looking over Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. A forest fire burns between Sunset Crater in the background and a closer ridge, the smoke cloud glowing a ghostly red. The hill on the right is silhouetted by the skyglow of the distant city of Flagstaff.
